no doubt – rock steady
No Doubt’s new album is much better than I had anticipated. no doubt goes into the studios armed with a bunch of different producers, all messing with no doubt’s sound in really interesting ways. And it’s clear that this formerly ska-pop band has broken free from previous genre definitions, proving they are as adept doing 70s style funk and 50s style doo-wop as they were with the snare-drum/horn-driven sound of the 90s. No Doubt has grown as a band, experimenting with all sorts of crazy business in the studio, and surprisingly, much of it works. Gwen Stefani’s writing remains strong. she tackles the more complex aspects of love without ever getting too heavy handed, as was the case on Return to Saturn.

Overproduction has worked its magic, but I’m hoping it doesn’t take too long to wear out. All in all, a good effort.

guy issues.

if you’d asked me a month ago how I felt about a few certain people, you’d get a few cut and dried responses.
on person A: I’m still hung up on him. he doesn’t want a relationship, but I still want something, maybe.
on person B: He’s my friend. We connect pretty well, but I think he has some stuff he needs to work out.
on person C: My gosh, he’s probably my best friend here. This would actually be a good relationship, but i’m just not attracted to him in that way…

but somehow, everything’s different now.
on person A: I’d like to be just friends with him. I’m not attracted to him in the way I was before. I sort of realize now that it was a phase in some ways, and that i’ve outgrown my blind-sighted admiration of this person.
on person B: Ahck! maybe things could work….:)
on person C: Still really comfortable, but things are starting to feel kind of couple-y. this is worrisome because it shouldn’t go that way unless it’s intended…

a spate of cd purchases

ok, somehow in the past week, I’ve managed to pick up a TON of cds. I got all of them for really good prices (between $2-$10… yay!)
