excerpt:

Stephen Downs, 61, was charged with trespassing in a mall after he refused to take off a T-shirt that said “Peace on Earth” and “Give peace a chance.”

Mall security approached Downs, and his 31-year-old son, Roger, on Monday night after they were spotted wearing the T-shirts at Crossgates Mall in a suburb of Albany, the men said.

The two said they were asked to remove the shirts made at a store there, or leave the mall. They refused.

The guards returned with a police officer who repeated the ultimatum. The son took his T-shirt off, but the father refused.

“I said, `All right then, arrest me if you have to,'” Downs said. “So that’s what they did. They put the handcuffs on and took me away.”

Downs pleaded innocent to the charges Monday night. The New York Civil Liberties Union said it would help with his case if asked.

Police Chief James Murley said his officers were responding to a complaint by mall security.

“We don’t care what they have on their shirts, but they were asked to leave the property, and it’s private property,” Murley said.

now that’s just scary. we live in the USA, not in the Oprichnina under Ivan the Terrible.

brain.. so… lazy…

apologies for the uselessness of this blog. my brain is fried, and i have nothing but bits of shell left. :( :( :( i know, the writing’s gone down. and the format is really impractical/outdated. and i don’t have fun little stories to tell anymore, just tired ones.

oh wait! I have a story! jer and i went to chili’s monday night as a little birthday dinner. got to grub on fajita nachos (yuuuuuum) and baby back ribs. (mm…. baby back ribs….) i also had a “snuggler,” which is a hot chocolate spiked with peppermint schnapps, as an after dinner drink. i’ve never had a ‘snuggler’ before, so i don’t know if mine was unusually strong or not, but it sure seemed strong. it must have been at least 1/3 schnapps since it really burned going down my throat (and remember, i’m someone whose drink of choice is vodka). plus i was tipsy after it. so much for my supposedly high tolerance! needless to say, jer drove us home.

so friday is coming up, and i said i’d do something fun with folks. but i can’t think of anything! aaaaaah!!

hehe. maybe i’ll just be lazy and forget about it. it’s just that a birthday get-together would be a great excuse to see some people i haven’t seen in a long time. :)

happy birthday to me… happy birthday to me… la da di…

okay, so my birthday was actually saturday, and i’m actually late in wishing myself a happy birthday. hehe. i guess some things never change.

it’s funny that some people thought that i was going to have a birthday celebration of some sort and just not tell them about it. do people think that i don’t want to be their friend or something? of course i’d tell people if i was going to celebrate! i just didn’t have any get together sort of thing this year… at least not yet. all i did this year was go home to my parents up north and have some yummy black forest cake from the sheng kee bakery by marina foods. oh, and i got my car back. >_

i have no idea whether

i have no idea whether it’s the rain or if it’s just karma comin back around to kick me in the ass, or if my luck has run out or what, but i had a very not-fun day today. it started off just fine. i got to my anthro class early and actually got a seat. too bad i was so tired i fell asleep during it. and then i went to get lunch at northern lights and was reminded why i don’t often eat on campus, and why when i do, i don’t get chicken soft tacos from that mexican place. what cheered me up while i was eating was that i ran into fisshy jen in one of the dining areas of north campus (the carpet was stinky from people treading in water… so needless to say the room didn’t smell april fresh) and i got to talk to her a little bit. but i heard something about c.b. and that kind of pissed me off. (on a side note, did you know he apologized to me a few months ago? i didn’t know what to say then, and damned if i know what to say now, but i have fewer nice things to say to/about him, that’s for sure…)

and since i was socializing instead of actually doing work, i had less time to work on my presentation for my history 99, and as a result, i was totally unprepared when i gave it. it was painfully obvious. I totally blanked on several of my points, and did a terrible job answering people’s questions. I believe I have given the worst presentation the class has seen so far. Needless to say, that was depressing.

afterward i went to the aphio meeting hoping to run into julie so i could give her the pics from the premiere and the coldplay tix she asked us to get for her. I was hoping to talk to wayne a little bit too, since i knew he was visiting. I did get to see julie and give her the tickets, but i left the pictures at home. AUGH! and plus i made a total ass of myself at the meeting giving an all too impassioned and incoherent speech as to why neil should have a namesake class and stuff. so that wasn’t fun either, although it was satisfying that neil won. =P

And that’s another thing. Alpha Phi Omega is a helluva lot of work, and there were a lot of people who did so much and put in so much effort to make it as good as they could. It’s lovely to see aphio doing as well as it is today: the people have diversified, they seem really cool, they seem really positive about the aphio message… it’s all the more reason to get involved and come back. even though i don’t feel i’ve really personally made very close friendships with most of the people, i still hold so many of the people in aphio with such deep respect. so here’s a short list, just for my personal satisfaction:

– neil dutta, my pledge dad, who was one of the personal forces behind aphio in its early years. his dedication to aphio is unparalleled, as demonstrated by his willingness to come back each year and stay involved, even when most of his pledge brothers were gone. his fun loving personality, good nature, wisdom, and his leadership and inspirational abilities really helped keep aphio together and going for a very long time. (since delta class!)
– linnea adler, now linnea lieberman, whose warmth and good sense only strengthened her ability to take a guiding hand to aphio, from beta class on to an advisory position. she’s another reason why aphio meant so much to me when i was there.
– rich jhong, former rci co-worker, also long time excomm member. was always quiet, but was always working in the background to make aphio something meaningful to more people, because it clearly meant a great deal to him. rich has an abiilty to make people laugh and make people comfortable, and his caring nature is one characteristic of a true aphio brother.
– mary trinh, former finance vp, the hardest working one i knew. always on top of things, always there with a ready smile and word of encouragement, mary is the embodiment of fellowship and leadership. another person about whom i cannot say enough good things.
– julie moskovitz, former service vp, she did a helluva lot of work the quarter she was (unfairly) forced to step down, despite being deathly sick. she is the most generous person in aphio in terms of time and support, and she is always ready to stick out a hand to fish a friend out of a raging river. she’s always tried so hard, and she never should have been sold down the river the way she was. it’s not nice to scapegoat someone just because they aren’t there to defend themselves.

that’s it for now. time for me to leave the library, but there’s more to come later.

by some freak bit of

by some freak bit of coincidence, i ran into sam on campus and we went to visit jen at her place on eastbourne. she was sick, so we thought we’d cheer her up with a little visit. short visit turned out to be seven hours, and i didn’t make it home until past eleven! and I had to drive home in the rain! BOO!

it was worth it, though. I haven’t spent much time with either jen or sam in a really long time — jen i think i saw a few months ago, sam i hadn’t talked to since maybe my birthday last year. it was very good to catch up and just relax with some old friends. oh, and make some new ones too. jen’s new roommate jen is really cool too. hehe. I know so many jennifers now! aaah! well, at least they’re all cool. =)

plug of the day

bel air camera for developing digital camera pictures. the paper is of an excellent quality, and the color looks very nice. definitely superior to ofoto, and for the same price. plus, no shipping fees cuz you can walk your ass down to bel air yourself and pick ’em up. :) i am now a believer.
