frustrated blogger

so much to say, so much going on, and I don’t have the patience to blog it all down!! aargh!!

lately I’ve been thinking a lot of the the state of modern feminism. ok, well, maybe not as big an idea of “feminism,” but more the very noticeable lack of female rock stars out there. no, I’m not talking about pop stars, like Christina or Michelle Branch or Avril Lavigne or anything. I’m talking about women like Kim Deal, Justine Frischman, Tanya Donnelly and a whole slew of female frontwomen for ROCK bands back in the 90s. Of those “rock” women, only Gwen Stefani is still around, and almost no new female voices have emerged in the scene. And that makes me sad. Remember the 90s? Sarah McLachlan and Lilith Fair? There were sooo many female voices on the pop scene then, and they proved to a male-oriented record industry that women can make sophisticated and popular music, and that there WAS an audience. a few years later, that message seems forgotten. The truth is, it’s not like women can’t rock or make music, it’s just that record companies aren’t trying to push those sorts of acts on us. Instead, they’re pushing upon us hyper-sexualized images of girls and young women. Every once in a while, a really talented female singer whose act ISN’T focused on her sex appeal gets heard on the radio, but it’s more a fluke than a common thing.

case in point: Dido. She had a record out, had a theme song to Roswell, and whose song was on the charts for almost a year before she hit it big. and HOW did she hit it big? not because her record company promoted her. Because Eminem sampled her vocals on one of his songs. Her songs were baaarely getting any radio play or notice until “thank you” hit it big.

I can’t believe i’m getting nostalgic about the nineties, but there was a lot of good “rock” music out there, and a LOT more female rockers then than there are now. It’s like, you have to be a cute/angst-ridden good looking boy who thrashes around a lot to get an audience? you have to be a hoobastank or a linkin park? what, cuz girls can’t attract an audience? that’s bullshit: good material will almost always garner an audience anytime.

ok, so how many female rock singers/band members can you think of?
no doubt. garbage. tori amos. alanis morrissette. anyone else?

how many pop stars?
avril lavigne. christina. michelle branch. probably a lot of others too, but I can’t think of them.

what about five years ago? which female artists did you hear on the radio?
donna lewis. sophie b hawkins. sarah mclachlan. chantal kreviazuk. heather nova. liz phair. paula cole. shawn colvin.

the music is also vastly different. if you want to talk about introspective singers/songwriters, can one really compare michelle branch with sarah mclachlan in terms of the subject matter they deal with?

looking back, I guess i’m really lucky that I grew up in a time where the culture I was exposed to wasn’t soooo obsessed with sex that art had to equal sex to sell. but what kind of world are we handing to the girls growing up now? =\

denied parking

I thought I was a shoo-in for parking for winter quarter but I guess I was wrong. someone got REJECTED~!!! 22 points isn’t enough to get a parking permit at ucla. I mean… what does it take? I’m a freaking senior, I live 20 miles away, and i’m on campus every day for class. dammit~!!! *shakes fist in frustration*

so i’m waitlisted. we’ll see. at this point, I’m really not sure what I should do…

I finally did it!

after a whole lot of hemming and hawing, I finally ordered that s200 I’ve been whining about for so long. thanks so much to neil and brian, who helped me find some kick-ass deals! I only wish I hadn’t waited so long to buy it that I missed out on those deals. it was still all right — found it on buydig.com for a total of $260. yay!

so here are some pics from my new camera! my best friend kipp came to visit from the bay area this weekend, so naturally, I snapped a few with him. more on kipp’s visit later.

my cluttery flatscreen. flash catches a little glare, but the pic is pretty sharp.

what a difference a flash makes. here’s my cluttery workspace all dark and blurry.

a pic of a nail clipper in macro mode.

kipp demonstrates why redondo beach is the most exciting place on earth. should have used a fill in flash on this. :(

yay! I get to see my bad pictures right away and figure out what I can do next time to make them look good. :) I still have memories of the time when I took 9 rolls of pictures from my summer travels (the 2002 olympic games, new york, boston) and upon developing them discovered that only about pictures out of the whole stack were any good. It was quite a sad day.

anyhow, that’s the most superficial of updates cuz i’m too tired to write anything thoughtful! so here’s some eye-candy. 0_o more on kipp’s visit and other stuff later…

maaaan

Very disappointed that Walter Mondale didn’t win his Minnesota Senate race. but boy is it nice to see such a legendary lawmaker back in politics. :) did you know he was part of the Senate that passed so many of LBJ’s Great Society policies? Good man!

and on a sadder note, I just discovered that former UC Berkeley Chancellor Chang-Lin Tien passed away last week. may such a great leader rest in peace.

TOMORROW IS ELECTION DAY!!!

overdue update!

please accept my deepest apologies for the slow loading of this page!! I’m still using enetation for my blog comments, and they’re having major issues with their servers and such. To those of you who’ve posted comments in spite of how sloooooow enetation is in recording them, thank you!! It’s too much trouble right now, and I hope to make it a bit easier in the future. 0_o

and now, onto the updates.

disease. den, chris, and allen had a housewarming party at their place last weekend, but I didn’t go. I think I caught something from one of my hacking, sneezing classmates last week. dammit!! luckily, it was just a really bad headache… one of those onsets of illness that my immune system beats down at the last minute… hah HAH! … but quite a bummer when it hits. I’m pretty sure I missed a mean party too. :(

this weekend was somewhat relaxing. It’s one of those “get things done” weekends that most people have every weekend, but jer and I seem to only have them once in a blue moon. ran to ikea to pick up a bathroom rug, and walked out with the aforementioned bathroom rug, a new trash can, pizza cutter, batteries, and a host of other household crap. Oh Ikea! how you make our lives easier, but also sooo much more hellacious. shopping at Ikea is a dizzying experience. I can’t think of any other way to push people through a massive warehouse like that, but I really hate taking the escalators to the top floor, especially on windy days. >_RE: Abuse

Yes, it does appear that all those not kowtowing to the P.C. leftist line will be censored/banned from the forums.

Could you please define “racist” and “sexist”? If I state that not all races are equal, is that “racist”? If I state that men and women are not equal, is that “sexist”? I hold both of these beliefs, so I’d like to know whether or not I will be permitted to engage in discussions on these boards.

– why do people feel so compelled to absolve themselves of responsibility to one’s society? no man is an island, and for someone to feel that an individual can build roads, feed their families, and protect their livelihood from crime, etc better than society can, well… I just don’t know. we all have to bear a load in this society in order to keep this ship afloat.

certain people seem to be of the opinion that their views are the only right views, taking the 1st amendment to mean that THEY are privileged to speak, and hence no one else is. They abuse this by speaking loudly and powerfully, dominating discussion through sheer brute force and rhetoric instead of well-thought-out discussion, in the case of the person I quoted above. yes, he does talk about discussion, but he’s just clogged up the board with a lot of really long postings of his hateful rhetoric. I believe in free speech, but everyone has to give a little in order for it to work.

I also find it incredibly upsetting that this attitude seems to be prevalent among many young people, whom while they should not simply defer to those supposedly older and wiser, should at least respect the fact that they don’t know everything. opinions are one thing, but there are always lots of other sides. I get really mad when 18 or 19 year olds decide they’ve made up their minds about important issues that affect the entire population based on what their parents have said, what foxnews tells them, what leftist propaganda organizations tell them.

then again, everyone grows and changes and alters their views with time, right? so there’s really no reason to get tooo mad about it. I’m sure my views aren’t perfect, and they’ll change with time.

graaaagh!!!!
