web hosting woes.

i almost, ALMOST give up on having a website at all. and then i realize i’m just too narcissistic to do that. ;-) okay, that’s not true. but it’s like… i’ve always had a webpage! aaah!

anyway, i am currently being hosted at freeshell.org, otherwise known as the sdf public access unix system. my friend thomas chen referred me to them, and i am completely grateful to him for doing so! (i’m learning unix! yay!) sdf went down last week, their access provider having cancelled service after SDF was apparently was the target of a DDoS attack. it’s back up and running fine now, but it reminded me of the importance of having a domain name and lots and lots of web space. i got a digital camera recently, and i’m so dying to put my pictures up online! oodles and oodles of pictures!!

so i bought this domain name (pearlescent.org) and tried playing with it, but i don’t think i’m happy with the host, webhostingweb. the dns for it has been down intermittently for the past week, so it seems a little pointless to purchase a domain name that’s memorable if it’s impossible to access the site with it anyway. augh! so i’ll keep looking.

dunno what i’m gonna do. there’s time to figger it out, so i’m not too worried. it’s just kind of a pain in the ass to be changing web addresses all the time. i would very much like something permanent. i mean.. there are at least three different ways you can access this site right now. i do not want to make that into five or seven or ten. that’s just ridiculous!

wish me luck. if you have any suggestions, feel free to email me. i wish i could just say, “leave a comment!” but enetation is sooooo darrrrned slooooooow. i’ll find a new way soon. =)

weekend update… old friends, and a new wedding gown

had a rare chance to hang out with the guys-formerly-of-beloit-but-now-of-some-avenue-in-WLA-i-can’t-ever-remember-which-is-why-i-don’t-visit. i dragged jer along with me to see jackie chan’s new flick, Shanghai Knights. i’m so glad jackie chan did this movie! it is enough to wash away that terrible debacle of a picture “The Tuxedo.” Shanghai Knights was a joy to watch! jackie and owen wilson have terrific chemistry, and the movie moves along with such a light-hearted energy because of them. it was the most fun i’ve had at a movie in quite a long time! my favorite scene was definitely the one where jackie does his balletic-slapstick kung-fu with umbrellas as props, turning a standard ka-pow style action fighting into a charming new rendition of gene kelly’s ‘singing in the rain” routine. =) it was marvelous.

the only disappointing thing about the evening was not really getting to talk to the guys while we were there. i mean, honestly, no one ever really gets to TALK talk at a movie (one reason why movies are sometimes less-than-ideal date places), but i still wish i could have had a couple of conversations with them. i guess they were going to hang out after and watch leprechaun 3 after, but jer and i were pretty tired (i’ll explain why later), and plus we didn’t want to have to drive all the way back to rb half asleep. and so we parted ways…

the other notable note of saturday was that i got my wedding gown. yep, we really did it. julie and i had gone shopping the week before at david’s bridal for gowns, and one of the consultants there found the most perfect thing for me. it’s an strapless ivory organza gown with beading at the bodice and beading along the train. i also got the requisite accessories to go with it — shoes, a veil with a little bit of ivory piping along the edges, as well as (gasp!) a tiara. (i know, what am i doing with a tiara??) i’m thinking of getting gloves to go with, but i haven’t decided yet. :)

it’s a little hard to believe all of this is happening, but .. :)

hooray for opera.

if you’re looking for a good browser alternative to Internet Explorer, you should really try Opera. it is far superior to IE in too many ways to count, with extensive customizability and lots of smart touches and features that increase usability a thousand fold. do give it a look when you can. Their new version, 7.01, just came out, and it is even better than the last version. i am overjoyed! hehe. I’ve converted my fiance and i’m on a mission to convert more folks!

what makes me mad, however, is that opera is still not supported by the good folks at blogger. I mean… they support netscape but not opera? Netscape’s days as a decent browser are long past them. It seems as if they were mired in their lawsuit against Microsoft (totally valid) for so long that they kind of missed their chances to excel at their original purpose – to build a better browser. Netscape is downright terrible, Mozilla is also stuck in 10 years ago — they have plenty of problems rendering pages and fail to incorporate any improvements in the overall browser experience that Opera very wisely picked up on. Oh yes, and the mail program is totally different… i’m playing with it right now and so far i’m really loving it~!!

So there. That’s my plug for Opera. now go download it!!

really mad.

i blew my anthro 7 midterm. I misread the question on darwin’s postulates (which i know, dammit) and bs’d some stupid ass answer.

I’m so mad. if i didn’t know it, that’s one thing, but to blow something i know?? GEEZE!!!

magic mountain!!

jerimy’s high school friends michael and sharon came down to visit us in LA this weekend, so we tried to so them a good time. instead of watching the super bowl (bucs vs raiders) we went to magic mountain! this was my first time going, but i’m sure i would never see magic mountain as empty as it was today ever again. we barely waited in line for goliath at the beginning of the day (around 10:30) and until we got to X (which was a 3 hour wait, partly because the ride broke down for about half an hour), all of our rides had maybe 20 minute waits at the most. it was amazing. it felt like we had the run of the place. we went from goliath to batman to superman (three times! totally great! freefall! woohoo!) to riddler’s revenge (awesome) to ninja (lame) to viper (head thunking about) … and then we hit x. afterwards, we went on deja vu, the swing ride, a centrifuge ride, revolution, back on superman, riddler’s revenge three or four more times. I lost count. but oh boy, my brain is completely scrambled now. -head thunks on table-

anyway, here’s a picture of “deja vu,” which is basically invertigo at great america except you don’t face each other.

i think i blacked out a couple of times on riddler’s revenge, which is a stand-up coaster sort of like vortex at great america. we went front row a couple of times, and my gosh, when you’re going that fast and the wind is whipping your face and you’re being hurled around, it’s really easy to just lose any sense of who/where/what you are and what’s going on. that happened to me a few times. aahahg. but oh, it was so great! it’s one of those rides that has enough variety in them so you don’t get tired easily. A+.

a shot of sharon and michael getting dropped on X
X was absolutely fantastic. the coaster itself starts out like a standard track-on-the-bottom coaster, but becomes a suspended one where the seats are actually hinged/swiveled, swinging out depending on where the track is. for the first drop, you basically in your chair holding on for dear life doing a skydiving style fall. it is absolute madness and it is unbelievably cool. tip: bring that shoulder harness down as far as you can so your head doesn’t bounce in ’em. oooghgh. it was a three hour wait, including a time where some folks couldn’t unload and the ride had to be shut down momentarily, nevertheless it was totally worth it.

my head is very seriously pounding. somebody should check on me and make sure i’m still breathing! aah!! hehehe.

anyway, today was great. virtually no lines, beautiful weather (in the high 70s!! almost 80 degrees!!), and great company. :)

oh, so here are some more pics.
